Question : When is the earliest you can start to teach Salsa dancing to children ?
Answer : Before the child is born you can listen to Salsa music & dance to the rhythms. Unborn babies can feel the vibrations from music as University studies on Classical music have shown. This is especially true if the mother dances to the music.
The Unborn baby gets used to feeling the music vibrations & learning that movement is associated with the music.
Question : What is the best type of Salsa music to choose ?
Answer : It is best to choose the type of latin music that is most popular in your local community.
It may be Bachata or Merengue or Salsa.
If you household listens to Salsa mainly then Salsa romantic songs are good. Anything that will not damage the babies ears is very good. You should choose songs with a very strong " CLAVE ".
CLAVE is the beat. You want songs that the beat is easy to hear.
Question : My child is born when can I start to teach the dance steps.
Answer : It is best to let your child decide this. You can force your child to learn Salsa dancing but as a teacher I feel it is better for your child to decide when & if they want to learn.
When your baby is born you can still hold them & sway to the music. Just be very gentle.
Some children have no interest in dancing or have no rhythm.
Children learn best by watching. So if you as the mother dance the basic step round your house to the music during the day & dance at home with your partner your child will see this & hopefully will want to learn.
If you are lucky & you can take your child to your own Salsa class this helps.
Some Salsa schools have classes for children. Some children as young as three & four have no trouble learning Salsa dancing.
Salsa dancing will teach your child coordination & rhythm. It will teach them social skills.
The good thing about Salsa dance is there is no right way to dance it. You can dance Salsa on any beat or across the beat.
You child can add other dance steps like swing, rock, tango or hip hop into their Salsa dancing & it is fine.
There is only one possible drawback to teaching kids Salsa dancing. It is that you child will expect their partners later on in life to dance & at least have rhythm. I am undecided if this is a good thing or bad.
