I’m not dating Britney Spears: Sandip

I’m not dating Britney Spears: Sandip

Posted on 30 January 2009 by admin

Ace Indian choreographer Sandeep Soparrkar wants to once and for all put to rest rumours about his alleged affair with Britney Spears and says he is too much in love with his partner Jesse Randhawa to even think of dating the American pop star.
"I don’t want to talk much about it as I am already in the news for the wrong reasons, but I want to make one thing clear that I am not dating Britney Spears," Soparrkar told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.
Just a few months ago, the international media was abuzz with the news that Spears is dating Soparrkar. Media reports had said that the two met at Madonna’s party, hit it off immediately and later Spears came to India to spend time with him.
"I am very much in love with my partner Jesse Randhawa. I enjoy dancing with her. Whenever I dance with her, it gives me a feeling of closeness and pleasure," he added.
Soparrkar specialises in Latin American ballroom dancing and says the attitude of Indians towards this dance form is changing and people are now taking it seriously.
"People are becoming aware about treating dance as a career option and those who are serious know how to go about it. Dance is not a hobby any more and many study dance as their subject," he said.
"The most important thing is to understand and learn dance; only then can you excel in classes. There are people who are born with some dancing skills, but it is something that can be learnt over a period of years," he added.
While many have taken to learning western dances like salsa, Latino, rumba and cha-cha-cha, Soparrkar feels that the popularity of Bollywood dances overshadow these elegant dance forms.
"Bollywood dancing is the weirdest dance form and it can be learnt as a hobby. All those moves look good on screen and they are fun. Bollywood has a major influence on our everyday life and people love to imitate the moves of a popular song, but it isn’t a serious dance form," the dancer said.
While Bollywood actors like Hrithik Roshan and Shahid Kapur have become a rage for their dancing skills, Soparrkar’s personal favourite is Govinda, who according to him is a carefree and energetic dancer.
"He dances so beautifully and his effortless moves and great expressions make him a treat to watch. He dances from the heart and you can see the pleasure dancing gives him," he said.
Although he finds Bollywood dance weird, Soparrkar will be choreographing for three movies – "Raftar 24×7", "Cyclone" and "Phir Kabhi", which features Dimple Kapadia and Mithun Chakraborty.
"I’m not going to follow the Bollywood style. It will be a completely different form of dancing," he said.
Soparrkar made his debut on the small screen last year with music reality show "Chak De Shehar Di Kudiyan Te Galli De Gunde". This year too the salsa expert is one of the judges on new reality TV series "CBF Stunner 10" on UTV Bindaas.
The show, aired every Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., aims to spread awareness about safe biking amongst youngsters.
"The competition takes care of your overall personality and it is not just a show. It is a platform that prepares young aspirants to achieve their goal. We are just a guiding factor to help teach them basic things that will help them in the long run," Soparrkar said.

two unlikely shoemakers for dancing queens

two unlikely shoemakers for dancing queens

Posted on 26 January 2009 by admin

By Mitali Parekh

Jameel Shah wants to ensure that dancing shoes are no longer imported

And then I began stamping my shoes with this brand. Shah Shoes! Wherever there is ‘Made in UK’ or ‘Made in USA’ I want to put ‘Made in India’” Jameel Shah’s pride in his work is infectious. He was a regular Dharavi boy, making leather wallets and belts. “But I was very interested in dance and joined Sandip Soparrkar’s classes.” That was seven years ago, when Sandip was importing ballroom and salsa shoes from the great wide abroad.
Jameel, whose words are punctuated by “Sandip sirs”, says, “I asked sir if I could make the shoes, and he gave me a sample. I studied it and the first shoes I made were a disaster. They were too stiff and hard. So I keep improving, taking feedback from the other dancers. Since I am a dancer myself, I knew what exactly they meant.”
Salsa and ballroom shoes have to be light and flexible. The sole is lined with suede for grip; the inside is also lined with suede to absorb the sweat and cushioned for comfort. “I have to keep the sole very thin so that I can feel the steps and heels have to be very strong, but light. So I use fibre heels that are light and glue and screw them in place. I kept asking for feedback so that I could improve! Which is why people ask for Jameel’s shoes now!”

With Sandip’s entry into reality shows, Jameel got orders for the contestants that had him making shoes overnight. “And now other teachers approach me. I’ve moved on to innovation and design the first pair for sir. And no matter how good or bad it is, he always keeps them, but gives me honest feedback.”
You can tell that he’s excited about the Spanish heels and the sheet of the new perforated suede, but errand boys keep interrupting him, saying, “Shooting pe sablok pooch rahe hai Jameel kidhar hai.’”

Jagannath Kamle now carves dies to make ballet shoes in all sizes

And those are the only words Jameel wants to hear.
I kept asking for feedback to improve. Which is why people ask for Jameel’s shoes now!
Jagannath Kamle does not know of Swan Lake or Anna Pavlova. His home in a chawl in Meghwadi, Jogeshwari, is impossibly divided to accommodate a 4 by 4 ft workshop. His only connection to the world of en pointe are sesham ballet shoes dies left to him by his brother Krishna Kamle, and the shoes he makes.
“Shoes are shoes,” says Kamle in Marathi, “I’m not very educated and don’t know English, but I know how to make shoes. I was trained my brother, who brought me up. I was either polishing shoes or making them from the age of 10.”
Krishna worked in the David company that made ballet shoes to provide to classes held in colonial times. When these students went to Russia and UK, they took the David shoes with them. But after the British left, the classes dwindled and the company closed operations in 1963.
As the last of the orders died, Krishna left Jagannath the smooth, curved wooden dies on which leather and canvas is moulded to make the snug slippers. “The die is very important because the shoes have a single seam that runs through the centre of the sole. The shoes are stitched inside out, with a layer of canvas and soft leather,” he says. They lay in his canvas bag, more for sentimental reasons that commercial. By then Kamle had moved on to a more steady source of income – making prosthetic shoes for polio patients.
In the middle of the new century, a ballet teacher, tired of ordering shoes for her students from overseas, was looking for someone to make them here. Veronica Balsara commissioned the search and the word was spread among leather and raw material sellers. Kamle, out to buy raw material, saw a picture of ballet shoes pinned up at an Andheri merchant’s store. “I told them the only dies available in Mumbai were with me,” says Kamle. “He put me in touch with Veronica madam…” And 40 years later, Kamle was making ballet shoes again.

Fitting the circular pattern over the die and creating perfect crinkles that fold over the toes and sides to come together at the seam is what takes the most time. “I could take a day making a pair.” In his house are patterns of pointe shoes with satin sashes that wind up to the calf. “Veronica madam has been bringing new patterns for me to make. I am now carving dies in more sizes.”
Kamle’s view of the art is shorn of romanticism. For him, ballet slippers are just a kind of hobby shoes that the elite are crazy enough to import and he has been making since he was 10.
I know everything about shoes… I was either polishing or making them from the age of 10

Hrithik Roshan’s Upcoming Flim on Salsa

Hrithik Roshan’s Upcoming Flim on Salsa

Posted on 25 January 2009 by admin

We have managed to find out the plot of Hrithik Roshan's upcoming next Kites produced by his dad Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu. The film stars Hrithik along with two leading ladies, Kangana Ranaut and hot Spanish actress Barbara Mori.
Our source reveals, "Kites has Hrithik playing a salsa teacher. Kangana plays a very rich girl and is shown as Hrithik's dance student. The story is set in Las Vegas. In the course of learning salsa from him, she falls madly in love with him. But then a twist in the tale takes place and the romantic story takes a thriller turn. Barbara Mori plays a Spanish speaking girl and will be seen in the first half of the film. In the film she speaks only in Spanish and Hrithik who plays the salsa teacher can't speak a word of Spanish. So he speaks to her in Hindi and yet the two communicate and fall madly in love. But then something happens that forces the two to split and that's where Kangana steps in. Kangana's role is not bigger than that of Barbara's."

"It is because of Barbara's non Hindi dialogues that Anurag Basu and Rakesh Roshan have decided to release the film with subtitles in both Hindi and English. There are a lot of languages spoken in this film like English, Hindi, Spanish and Philippino," the source concludes.
Kites is set for a summer 2009 release worldwide
