At one point he broke the dancing record by dancing for 55hours straight at the longest dance party in Goa in 2004. From holding dance workshops
at Bhopal to training over 10000 students in Mumbai, Raunaque Sidana today is one of the most approachable dance masters in the city.
An official instructor at the Instituto Hispania, Raunaque has been in Mumbai for almost three years and aims to familiarise more and more youngsters with Latin American dance. “I used to train in Bollywood dancing at the Spanish institute in Delhi and later was noticed by a young girl from PutoRica who then taught me salsa. Since then I have been in love with it,” he recalls.
Raunaque who has been dancing since he was a child has now been teaching the art for almost 18 years. “Salsa is obviously more difficult than Bollywood dances. In salsa the synchronisation of beats and steps gets a little tough,” he informs. Raunaque who has been a part of large traditional festivals like Khajuraho, Malva and Orcha has also trained for international performances at New Zealand and Mauritius.
“Internationally, students are more inclined towards traditional Indian dance forms whereas it is the opposite in India,” he says. Today apart from training for salsa Raunaque also has three Bollywood films up his sleeve which he isn’t yet ready to discuss in detail.
So the next time you see the hero breaking into salsa steps it might just be thanks to Raunaque’s training
